A Thousand Splendid Suns...

That day I finished the book A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS by Khaled Hossaini. This book vividly depicts the lives of two women,Mariam and Laila in the rugged terrain of Afghanistan under the strict rule of the Talibans. The Talibans , an ethnic group of the mujahideen are Pashto speaking people who imposed certain restrictions upon the lives of women in Afghanistan and henceforth made their lives miserable. The bonding between Mariam and Laila are almost like mother and daughter being maried to the same man Rasheed(thier husband)an Afghan guy. These two endure not only the brutality of their husband Rasheed but also the appalling atrocities of the taliban.Yet they remain resilent and true to themselves.Laila lost her parents in a bomb blast during the Civil war in Afghanistan and afterwards she was almost forced to marry Rasheed who was already Mariam's husband then.Even she was misguided as a man told her that her beloved Tariq is dead.Laila and Mariam spent their lives under the taliban control in Afghanistan where they werw not allowed to do anything by themselves, not to go outside, not to listen music or watch movies and so on.Hossaini in this novel invents a fictional place Gul Daman,a village near Herat......which shows Lamb's quality of mystifying the readers in this manner. This book portrays a detailed account how the Soviets left Afghanistan and the Mujahideen group captured Kabul, the Afghan capital from the communist president Mohammed Nazibullah. The Talibans rose to power in 1996 , Afghanistan and since then they are ruling there.Amidst this chaos situation,Hossaini shows that these two women did'nt hamper their spirits and courage to fight against such adverse circumstances and finally wins upon.I was impressed to find Mariam's sacrifice when she allowed Laila and Tariq(later on when Laila found Tariq)to escape from Kabul to Pakistan,Peshawar. With a detailed account of the taliban rule,Hossaini also portrays the struggle of Mariam and Laila to save Laila's children Aziza and Zalmai from the Talibans.Hossaini is a story teller of dizzying power and this piece of work is a masterful narrative. Those who are interested in knowing the Afghan history, lives of women in Afghanistan and so on,this is a unique piece of art for them.I can challenge that u will certainly enjoy while reading this book.
