Muktodhara

The term 'Muktodhara' suggests free flow of something....Free flow!Well, one can easily attribute this free flow as freedom from something which prevails in the movie..The Director duo Shiboprasad Mukherjee and Nandita Ray's bold attempt to make a real life incident into a reel life is really commendable. The storyline revolves round a large number of hardcore criminals in an infamous jail and the  famous danseuse Niharika (Rituparna Sengupta) who takes up the challenge of making a 'Balmiki Pratibha'(Tagore's famous dance drama) utilising them.Ex-convict Nigel Akkara playing the lead role of the prisoner Yusuf Mohammad Khan tries his level best to live upto the expectations of the audience.I.G of Police department Debshankar Haldar makes justice to his role and Kharaj Mukherjee as the foul mouthed Union Leader of the Police force of Dumdum jail is just fantastic in his role. However,Bratya Basu, the criminal-lawyer husband of Niharika just steals the show who will definitely attract the audience's attention from the beginning till the end.Rituparna performs a great job by trying to reform the jail inmates and especially trying to turn Yousuf from Ratnakar to Balmiki while simultaneously craving for her own,and her deaf-dumb daughter Spriha's independence/freedom from her cold, ruthless, inconsiderate husband Bratya Basu. Therefore, freedom has different levels of meaning in the movie:freedom for Yousuf from the jail, freedom from family for Niharika which takes an interesting turn towards the end of the movie.Music which is one of the most essential elements of a film has been wonderfully treated.Shiboprasad excels himself in portraying the sardar character of 'Happy Singh',the name is an irony. This film is a an eye-opener for ordinary common masses who hardly have any idea about the life of jail inmates. The uphill task of reforming the convicts through culture therapy becomes finally successful when Yusuf returns back even after evading from prison along with few of his fellow-inmates being haunted by his conscience thereby completing his reformation.I was awestruck to find whether this is a reality or as Nigel said in the movie..''ebhabeo fire asha jay..''..a great comeback in true sense of the term!..A feast for the eyes, undoubtedly. Muktodhara is for everyone and freedom is not just for the inmates of Niharika, but is a rejuvenation of the soul.Truly mood uplifting!!
